Lunar New Year 2024

Cherrywood kicked off the Year of the Dragon with a spectacular lion dance, student cultural show, and dragon crafts workshop.  Students had a special visit from the God of Money who shared the tradition of giving a red envelope to wish children good luck for the new year.  The bright photo booth was filled with fun props and lucky symbols for students and teachers to capture the memories and spirit of the most important holiday in many Asian countries such as China, Vietnam, Korea, Philipines, and more.  The celebration ended with a home made traditional family feast for the the teachers- thanks to our amazing parent volunteers!  Cherrywood HSC wishes our Charger community a year of health, wealth, and prosperity!

ANCCS Internal Competition

We had more than 70 students participate in our internal Association of Northern California Chinese Schools (ANCCS) internal competition. The winners of our internal competition can be found here. Participants will receive a certificate of participation as well as a T-shirt designed by our own kindergartener, Kaitlin Lau. Winners will receive a medal. All these will be distributed late February.

The final list of students who will be representing Cherrywood in the external competition on March 24, 2024 at Lynbrook High School is published here. We wish them success in the competition and may they make Cherrywood proud!

Special thanks to our Mandarin Immersion Parent Advisory Council, teacher judges and parent volunteers who helped make this competition a success!

Family STEAM Night

HSC hosted its first ever Family STEAM Night on December 8th to kick off the holiday season and celebrate science, technology, engineering, art, and math.  It was a fun-filled evening with a variety of activity stations including coding with robots, AI drawing, engineering the tallest tree or a snowman catapult, chemistry painting, building a spectroscope, designing electric circuit holiday cards and Christmas trees, creating cookie ornaments and wrapping paper, and solving math puzzles.  Families also enjoyed shopping at the 5th Grade Mini Maker Market, cookie decorating, and taking photos with Santa.  Thank you to our volunteers, sponsors, and all of the generous participants that helped fulfill a wish from the Cherrywood Giving.

Congratulations to our lucky winners:

Diwali Celebrations

Cherrywood celebrated Diwali for the second year in a row with many festive activities led by Divya Krishnan and the Diwali Committee.  Students enjoyed watching the Diwali talent show, doing the coloring activities in class, working together to create the rangoli chalk art, making hands on arts & crafts, and doing the flash mob during lunch recess.  Teachers joined the fun with henna tattoo, gifts from India, and a cultural feast.  The festival of lights was an amazing learning experience that brought the Cherrywood community together, we look forward to what's in store for next year!

Students enjoyed weekly art activities, Spanish vocabulary lessons, festive music during recess, and workshops to make paper flowers and luminarias.  Staff enjoyed a taste of Mexico each week with culturally themed foods.  The festivities concluded with a special performance by Ballet Folklorico Mexico Vivo, sponsored by Councilmember David Cohen from the District 4 Office.  We are proud to honor the diverse communities at our school and look forward to celebrating Diwali in November!

Mid-Autumn Festival Play

Cherrywood HSC produced its first ever multicultural play to celebrate the annual Mid-Autumn Festival.   There were two student performances of the Legends of Mid-Autumn Festival on 9/29/23 that engaged, educated, and enriched our Charger community.  Students and staff learned the Chinese history and culture behind some of the festival traditions.  The play allowed all students the opportunity to express themselves creatively and participate in a collaborative setting.  We are very proud of the cast, choir, and behind the stage crew for giving up their lunch time, coming afterschool, and dedicating themselves to make this play happen in just 3 weeks!  Thank you to Ms. Ann Chu for directing the shows and sharing your love of theatre arts with the students.  This play was made possible by our parent volunteers and through the support of The Chinese Heritage & Cultural Project, The Lovett Foundation, and Invest Campaign donors.
